The Many Types of Industrial Coatings

← Back to List
We've spent a good amount of time in this blog explaining why it's important to get a polyurea coating for your equipment. Whether you're protecting your boat, adding a layer of protection to your containment structure, or making sure your truck bed is kept in perfect shape, polyurea coating can do it all!

Maybe right now you're considering getting an industrial coating for your building or vehicle. What would be the best fit for your structure? Should you go organic or inorganic? And what's the difference between the two anyway?

Don't worry, we can sort it all out for you!

The Types of Industrial Coatings

Before we begin, it's important to define what exactly an industrial coating is. An industrial coating is applied to metal or concrete to help protect that structure or vehicle against chemical, environmental, or mechanical damage. For example, if you spray a polyurea coating on your vehicle, that coating will adhere to your vehicle, creating a waterproof and impact resistant barrier.

Industrial coatings come in three varieties - metallic, organic, and inorganic. Let's take a look at each type individually.

Organic Coatings

Organic industrial coatings contain carbon compounds and are usually used as a barrier to fight corrosion and damage. Some of the more popular organic coatings include alkyd, epoxy, polyurethane, and our favorite, polyurea. These coatings use a combination of chemicals to create a layer that will give you maximum protection against impact damage, harsh chemicals, corrosion, abrasion, and just plain old weather. It's short on curing and drying times and, if applied correctly, will last a long, long time.

Inorganic Coatings

As opposed to organic coatings, which uses natural material, inorganic coatings are created through a chemical reaction and uses materials such as enamel. The three most popular types would be:

  • Acrylic, which can be found in most industrial painting;

  • Ceramic, which is good for thermal insulation;

  • And intumescent, which insulates structures from fire.

Like organic coatings, inorganic coatings are good to use in reducing corrosion. However, these coatings are not as durable as an organic coating.

Metallic Coatings

A type of inorganic coating, metallic coatings use is exactly as the name suggests. It uses metals such as metallic oxide to help protect against corrosion and exposure from the elements. However, unlike organic and inorganic coatings, these coatings should only be applied under controlled conditions.
