Know When Closed-Cell Spray Foam is the Best Choice?

← Back to List
Are you considering whether spray foam insulation will work for your job? If you are, remember that you have a choice between two different foam types. In a prior article, we presented you with information concerning the benefits of open-cell spray foam.  However, there are reasons that closed-cell spray foam may be the best choice for your application.  Learn why.

First, are you familiar with closed-cell spray foam?  The significant difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam is its relationship to air and moisture.  Open-cell spray foam allows liquids and gasses to pass through it.  This means moisture can get in.  Notwithstanding, open-cell spray foam insulation is resistant to air.  Closed-cell spray foam is protective against both moisture and air.  Many find benefits from the latter.

It might seem as though there is no reason to even consider open-cell spray foam.  However, the cost differential makes it a consideration.  That’s just one reason some businesses work with open-cell foam products.  However, there are many circumstances where closed-cell spray foam is not only the best choice but also the best investment.

Advantages of Closed-Cell Spray Foam

We have already mentioned the reaction of both types of spray foam to moisture and air.  However, other important benefits make closed-cell application a smart choice.  For one, closed-cell spray foam adds a remarkable structural strength.  By its nature, polyurethane solutions are known for their durability.

Some actually think of closed-cell spray foam applications as a form of cement.  At the very least, closed-cell spray foam adheres to surfaces and increases their endurance.  This is particularly useful when constructing walls, ceilings and roofs.

Roofers find that closed-cell spray foam insulation adds to weather resistance.  For example, the hard surface serves to repel against hailstorms and subsequent roof leaks.  The impact resistance also applies to the outer building surfaces.  It is recognized as an option in both residential and commercial properties.

Closed-cell spray foam is denser than open-cell alternatives.  Closed-cell foam is of medium density, at two pounds per cubic foot.  Comparatively, open-cell is one-half foam per cubic foot and considered low density.

What are some of the other advantages of closed-cell spray foam insulation?  It can be applied at low temperatures.  Contractors also find it quite accommodating, as it can fit into compact spaces.  It is well respected as an insulator and barrier against water infiltration.
