Both open and closed-cell spray foam insulation involves the application of polyurethane products.  You may already be familiar with the virtues of polyurethane. When it comes to sealing air, it is invaluable. Polymers are activated by heat and strengthen into place. The flexibility of using a foam product makes it conducive to most environments.

When Should You Consider Open-Cell Spray Foam

Spray foam insulation is an excellent solution for a variety of reasons. Air seepage is a major concern. Drafts are too often responsible for rising utility costs. The effects extend further. Spray foam insulation makes it harder for insects and rodents to intrude premises.

But, what about open-cell spray foam insulation? When is it preferable to use this product?

First, it’s important to understand what open-cell spray foam actually means. It is also known to be low density. One of its advantages is that it allows for some flexibility when used to combat air seepage or insulation. You may also hear open-cell spray foam referred to as half-pound foam. This reference concerns the product’s weight. When measured in relation to cubic feet, it is a half-pound per square foot. The R-value, or resistance to heat flow, is estimated to be somewhere between 3.5 to 3.7 per inch.

You might think of spray foam insulation as a means of plugging up the holes and strengthening overall construction. It can be sprayed into open cavities or onto joints. Seams can be hardened with spray foam insulation so that building shifts do not cause them to drift them apart.

Open-cell spray foam insulation offers advantages. It is a means of creating a sound barrier. It is also mold resistant.  It is an affordable solution to reducing energy costs and pays for itself.

When is open-cell spray foam the preferred products? Before you decide on your own, you may want to seek expert consultation. Since it offers protection against mold and mildew, open-cell spray foam is ideal for attics and basements. However, you may also want to use a vapor retardant in some application situations.
