Pipeline Corrosion Can Be Disastrous: What Can You Do?

← Back to List
Most people aren’t aware of just how many pipelines there are across the nation. In fact, the numbers are more than a little incredible. Take for example natural gas pipelines alone. According to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, there were over 350 miles of natural gas pipelines in 2013. During that same year, there were 192,396 miles of hazardous liquids pipelines. More than likely, the numbers have gone up in the past five years. Can you imagine the impact of corrosion over any portion of the pipelines?

No doubt you can easily figure out the adverse effects of corrosion. First, there’s the issue of exposure. NACE International is an organization that identifies the overall risks of corrosion. They point out that corrosion becomes an issue because unprotected pipes may be subject to any of the following conditions:

  • Burial in the ground

  • Exposure to the atmosphere, or

  • Submergence in water

Like it does to every other surface, corrosion causes deterioration. As a result, the lifespan of a pipeline may be gravely shortened. Obviously, this is an expensive proposition. However, there are other important considerations. When corrosion breaks apart pipelines, the release of hazardous materials can be disastrous to both the environment and people exposed to it. It can also result in shutdowns for undetermined periods of time.

Warding Against Pipeline Corrosion

Pipeline accidents and failures can result in monumental costs. Therefore, preventative maintenance and repair are critical. Protective coatings and linings are well respected as industry standards. Corrosion mitigation should be taken seriously with products that have proven a success.

One of the many benefits of using polyurea-based coatings is the fact that they cure quickly. Some coatings are applied directly in the field. However, in many cases, protective coatings are actually used at the pipe mill during the time of manufacture.

To end users, pre-coated pipes offer relief. For one, they hasten the process of laying down the initial pipeline. That said, protective coatings are also beneficial for rehabilitation projects. Obviously, this means the application is accomplished on existing pipelines.

There are standard practices for rehabbing existing pipelines and conduits. As part of the technical advice provided by Marvel Coatings, you receive professional recommendations that meet the established guidelines.
