Hospitals Can Help Keep Disease Away With a Polyurea Coating

← Back to List
We've spoken countless times about the protection polyurea coatings can give to your vehicle, building, floor, or anything else you can think of. It is impact resistant, will prevent scrapes and rust from forming, and is waterproof. But did you know that these coatings are also disease-proof?

For example, let's say you work at a hospital. You're constantly surrounded by bacteria and illness. Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say so -- according to 2016 data, at least one in every 25 hospital patients has a received a healthcare-related infection. This is an improvement over previous years, but it's still a frightening thought -- especially if you're heading to the hospital!

But you know what could help? A polyurea coating from Marvel Industrial Coatings. Here's how.

Why Polyurea Coatings for Hospitals?

When selecting a coating, hospitals need to follow certain guidelines. First, and most important, the coating must be kept clean. That means constant scrubbing and disinfecting. Only a high performing coating like polyurea can hold up.

Not only does it need to stay clean, but the coating needs to prevent bacteria from forming. This can happen by water seeping into little cracks, which can cause mold and mildew to form. But polyurea coating does not only repel water, but it can get into those cracks and crevices and seal them up tight. No mold will be growing here!

Now let's take a good hard look at hospital floors. There's a lot of traffic on those floors and chances are an epoxy coating has been used to cover up the concrete. We've explained before the issues with epoxy coatings. And the major concern is the fact that epoxy is not entirely stainproof or resistant to chemical spills.

But polyurea is both. So if a harsh chemical falls on the floor, hospital workers don't have to worry about it eating through the coating and damaging the concrete underneath.

Now let's take a trip into the surgical area. It's essential for OR rooms and other surgical areas stay sterile. Although many areas in the hospital, like a patient's room, an acrylic latex coating is all that's needed since the cleaning is not as severe. But this is not the case in a surgical area. There are specific cleaning requirements for these areas that hospitals must follow.

Not only does the coating need to withstand constant cleaning but, like your floors, it needs to protect from chemicals, something that a polyurea coating will do.

In addition, polyurea coatings have the added protection of withstanding UV exposure. According to recent research from Duke Health, a new tool of ultraviolet light called UVC can help hospitals battling drug-resistant bacteria from sitting around patient rooms, which can cause new infections from occurring. But polyurea coatings can resist constant exposure from this light, protecting the surface below.
